Piano lessons

As an experienced music teacher I am aware that children learn in a variety of different ways and I cater for these individual learning styles.

I enter many of my pupils for examination with the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM). I also strongly believe that piano lessons should be fun and if pupils simply wish to learn without taking exams, then I will encourage them to follow their own aspirations. I come from a classical background but I also enjoy playing and teaching other genres, such as light pop and jazz. I have extensive range of music for students to choose from.

I also coach higher education students who are preparing for performing elements of their course.

Piano lessons take place in a dedicated room in Llanymynech Village Hall, which is conveniently situated on the A483 between Welshpool and Oswestry.

Lessons cost £16 per 30 minutes or £32 per hour.

It is always beneficial to have a piano or a keyboard at home to practice on.  If you are looking for advice on purchasing an acoustic or digital piano, please contact Stuart Jones Piano Sales in Newtown or visit the website www.stuartjonespianosales.co.uk

Theory lessons

A pass in Grade 5 theory is more than just a certificate -  it allows students to progress onto the higher ABRSM grades – 6,7 & 8. Some parents ask me why it is a necessity to take the theory exam.

The Grade 5 theory syllabus looks at the fundamentals of music notation and covers melody, rhythm, harmony, structure and scale forms. It is gives instrumentalists and singers the foundations for studying their instrument at a higher level. Therefore, students who take this exam, acquire an in-depth knowledge on analytical aspects of a piece of music, such as interval and chordal structures. These skills are also essential for sight reading development and note reading in general. This syllabus is often used as a prerequisite to enter performing arts universities.

I offer support with marking papers right up until the date of the exam and all aspects of the online exam entry are made by myself. The ABRSM have now switched to online theory exams. Online music theory exams can take place in any location where the student has access to a laptop or desktop computer.  As soon as the student is ready to take the exam, I will make the entry and the exam link will be sent to the student.

I aim to make theory lessons fun and engaging. At Grade 5 level, theory lessons overlap with the practical lessons. I therefore recommend an hourly lesson per week to enable theory and practical learning

I was really lucky to take my grade 5 theory with Helen. It’s broadened my musical talent, to enable me to go all the way up to grade 8. I enjoyed learning about the different technicalities and all the elements that are needed to do the higher grades."
